ABOUT ABOUT

In the early 10th century, an unknown scribe in Syria painstakingly copied all 24 books of the Hebrew Bible onto 792 pages of sheepskin.

More than 1,100 years later, on May 17, 2023, that Bible – known as the Sassoon Codex - became the most expensive book ever sold at auction, for $38.1 million, to former US Ambassador to Romania Alfred H. Moses, who bought it as a gift to ANU - The Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv.

Before this precious Bible departs for Israel, you are invited to an exclusive peek at the oldest near-complete Bible in existence, the retelling of our Jewish story from Adam through Kings David, Solomon and the later kings of Judea.

Please join us for an up-and-close viewing of the Sassoon Codex - a moving reminder of our past and its power in our present - with a special discussion on The History and Significance of Codex Sassoon with Dr. Sharon Mintz, Senior Consultant Judaica, Books and Manuscripts to Sotheby’s and Curator of Jewish Art at The Library of The Jewish Theological Seminary.
